The Time it Takes / Le temps qu’il faut

The Musée d’art de Joliette is proud to present Emma Waltraud Howes’ first solo museum exhibition, The Time it Takes, featuring a dialogue between recent and earlier works dating from 2012 to 2024.

With a background in dance, Howes works with bodies in time and space. Her multidisciplinary projects are often rooted in drawing and speculative choreographic notation and unfold in the third and fourth dimensions: a process of intermedial translation that takes place over an extended time. Bang Bang Baroque, her first individual film work, is the centrepiece of the exhibition. This hyper-glitch opera for six performers draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including protest techniques, psychoanalytical theories, heavy metal headbanging, and Baroque caricatures. Howes’ aesthetic universes converge—from graphite and inflatable sculptures to coloured glass and video—to give form to movement and life to form.

This exhibition is made possible by the financial support of the Canada Council for the Arts and Superframe.
