In this Exuberant Apocalypse, a procession of the ‘Artichoke Brigade’ begins, led by the Punitive Major Drum. Nine players enter, each carrying a mace that is both a weapon and a consolation object. The players chalk their individual trajectories on the floor, based on the score Shifting Tethers: or How to Conduct a Flustered Symphony. This score serves as a guide for the performers’ movements, marking the axes of the sculptures in space.

The scene unfolds in a loop: we watch the planting of seeds, their growth, and the negotiation between players until the ‘Smash Glass Battle’ is unleashed – a brutal, physical confrontation. After the battle is over, the cleanup crew moves in to restore the room. The loop repeats itself in different variations and remains unpredictable due to its cyclical nature.

The work plays with the tension between violence and fragility, between ritualised gestures and spontaneous aggression. It is reminiscent of a marching band whose sounds and movements are deconstructed and reassembled over the course of the performance. The transition from choreographed actions to chaos and destruction reflects the fragile state of human existence, with each round preparing and simultaneously questioning the next.

The passive and active participation of the actors is reinforced by the roles of the ‘Passive Bystanders’, ‘Demon Crew’, and the ‘First Responders’, who are not only observers but also participants in this surreal cycle. The performance ends as it began – the parade begins again, leading us into another round in which no two performances are identical.
