Subtle Architecture
The inspiration for Subtle Architecture comes from the yellow lines in front of government buildings in Canada and Germany. These perimeters designate public smoking areas where people stand, just inside the demarcated space. For the first part of this work, chalk was used to mark out various urban locations where a combination of mundane movements and gestures from historical and contemporary dance were performed. For the second part, the locations were documented in photographs, which were then printed and altered as an extension of the process. In the image, inside the borders defined by the chalk, layers of the photographic paper were physically removed so that light from behind the photo can shine through.
