The Nine Returns to the One

2018

The Nine Returns to the One consists of three scores, one for each performer, and a separate score for guests. The performers “flock” throughout the space in a reference to the murmuration of sparrows. Guests are invited to follow a graphic notation marked on the floor to enter and exit the frame of the performance. They are encouraged to engage with their surroundings and observe the decision-making process of themselves as well as the other participants.

The scores are based upon the Nine Palaces, a Chinese martial arts system for practicing Baguazhang, a circular sequence of movements for managing multiple opponents at once. The accompanying soundtrack, Children for or against the Destruction of Birds, comprised of slowed-down sparrow calls, functions as a musical translation of the original drawings.
